Colleen's Walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Thanks for visiting my fundraising website!

As you may know, a few years ago I completed a century bike ride (100 miles) around Lake Tahoe as part of a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Team-in-Training (TNT) event. In return for training support from LLS, I raised over $5000 in donations to LLS to support research and patient care for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood-related cancers.

My personal commitment to the efforts of LLS stems from the experiences I've had in my own family with lymphoma. My mother passed away in 1998 from Central Nervous System lymphoma, and my grandfather passed away in 1992 from non-hodgkin's lymphoma. All of my efforts to support LLS are done in honor of their memory. I also have several friends who've faced leukemia or lymphoma within their own families. Thankfully, their experiences have had much happier endings than mine due to the ever-increasing effectiveness of treatments for these diseases.

Well, I’m at it again! This year I'll be completing a ½ marathon over Labor Day weekend, September 1st (my birthday!) in Virginia Beach, VA. The distance is much shorter, but I somehow I've always found riding my bike to be easier than running/walking, so it's still quite a challenge for me. I have committed to raising $3000 in order to participate in this event.

One of the things I like best about supporting LLS is the emphasis placed on supporting patients and their families. As part of the TNT experience, every "team" is paired with a local Honored Patient, a person who is facing, or has faced in the past, the challenge of surviving a blood-related cancer. The Honored Patient is a source of motivation and inspiration for TNT teammates as they train for their events. In return, the Honored Patient and his/her family benefit from the tremendous emotional support offered by LLS and TNT participants. It is this strong personal connection that keeps me motivated to continue supporting LLS. My team's honored patient is Angelique, a 21 year old University of Michigan student who is in remission after facing Hodgkin's disease at age 19. My team has even named itself after her as "Angelique's Adventurers."
